How to Maintain an Air Purifier So It Keeps Working
A purifier with a clogged filter moves air without cleaning it. A little routine maintenance keeps performance — and your running costs — where they should be.
Clean the pre-filter regularly
The pre-filter collects hair, lint and coarse dust. Vacuum it or, if it is washable, rinse and dry it fully before refitting. Every two to four weeks is a good rhythm in a busy home.
Replace filters on schedule
- HEPA filters typically last 6–12 months depending on use and air quality.
- Carbon filters saturate faster if you are targeting odours.
- Do not wash a HEPA filter unless the manufacturer says it is washable — water damages the media.
- Filter-free models remove this step entirely.
Keep the unit itself clean
- Wipe the housing and vents with a dry or barely damp cloth.
- Check the sensor window on smart models — dust on the sensor causes false readings.
- Always unplug the unit before opening it.
Signs it needs attention
Weaker airflow, a musty smell, a filter indicator light, or auto mode constantly running high all point to a filter that is due.
